A Page from the #DrawingPapers Archive
This page from Drawing Papers 10 features Untitled, a watercolor and gouache on board drawing created by #BerlindedeBruyckere in 1994.
Untitled was included in the exhibition Selections Summer 2000, which featured a small group of artists from the Viewing Program. Maaretta Jaukkuri writes of De Bruyckere’s work, “The veiling of the face, of the gaze, is a gesture of hiding from the outside world; it blocks our communication and renders impossible the definition of the self. The act of veiling is also a sign of concentration on the mind and the body. The hideaway becomes a locus of protection for the person inside whose original need for it is exemplified by the bodily postures depicted in De Bruyckere’s drawings.” The Drawing Papers are a series of publications documenting The Drawing Center’s exhibitions and public programs and providing a forum for the study of drawing. -Kate Robinson, Bookstore Manager
