COOL TECH FOR THE PLANET: Saturday marked a major milestone in the fight against #ClimateChange! The United States and nearly 200 other nations reached an agreement to amend the #MontrealProtocol to phase out chemicals used in air conditioners and refrigerators known as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide in contributing to climate change. Without action, #HFCs were expected to nearly triple but the agreement will cut the production and consumption of HFCs by more than 80 percent over the next 30 years. The Energy Department will help play a role by working with industry partners and National Labs to develop, demonstrate and deploy next-gen #cooling #technologies that don’t use HFCs. One example is this Desiccant-Enhanced Evaporative air-conditioning system that doesn’t need a compressor or environmentally harmful refrigerants to create cold.
