Here, a self-portrait painted by the artist Kerry James Marshall, one of our seven #tgreats, for T — his first naturalistic portrait in which he hasn’t darkened the skin tone as a rhetorical device. ‘‘There are a lot of reasons for not doing it blacker than it is. It has to do with the idea that I always want to reinforce that choices are being made,’’ he says. ‘‘I’m hyper-conscious of this as a negotiation between expectations. My whole idea of what it means to be an artist now? It’s all choice. It’s always about choices and you should always get exactly what you want.’’
