In the mid-19th century, the American photographer William Mumler claimed to have discovered a process to “capture” apparitions with his camera. Whether a clever hoax or empirical proof of the supernatural elements which surrounds us, Mumler’s Spirit photographs remain unique artifacts of a weird, arcane American history. This cartes-de-visite (shown on far right) was borrowed from the similarly strange Thanatos Archive in Washington.
Each day during the month of October, we’re sharing an object or view from the exhibition, “Guillermo Del Toro: At Home with Monsters.” Tag your photos #GDTatLACMA for a chance to be featured! —
