An Orca attacks a Southern Sea Lion pup on the beach in Punta Norte, Argentina. Unlike most other whales, which hunt mainly in open water areas, orcas off the coast of Punta Norte often have to come to land in search of food, a behavior taught to calves by their mothers. These orcas can reach lengths of 8 meters long, while weighing up to 12,000 pounds. Though often referred to as “killer whales,” orcas rarely attack humans, and no attack has ever been fatal. Orcas are the largest species of dolphin and have very high cognitive abilities. But just how smart are these animals? Because the majority of their lives remain hidden from researchers, so much remains unknown.
