So, what should you really be consuming after you get done with a workout? (Talking about lifting, HIIT training, or longer steady state cardio sessions)
For starters, the *worst* thing you can do is eat/drink nothing. When you finish training, your main goals are to:
– replenish glycogen (energy stores in muscles & liver) – increase protein synthesis (repair damage from training)
By doing so, you are able to repair existing & build new muscle, improve recovery, reduce soreness, and reap the many other benefits of resistance training to the fullest, which include better immune function, stronger bones, and improved fat oxidation abilities (aka fat “burning” ) So how do you do that? Most studies have shown the the optimal post-workout nutrient combination is protein + carbs w/ low fat immediately after. This is because exercise primes your body to absorb nutrients needed for recovery and growth! (Fat is slow digesting and will slow that process down– great for other times of the day *except* for post-workout)
Protein will help rebuild muscle, and carbs will replenish your depleted glycogen stores as well as help shuttle nutrients into cells.
While you can definitely eat whole food meals (ex: chicken & rice), many people including myself prefer using a protein supplement such as @PEScience #SelectProtein because it’s convenient, easy to digest, and tastes amazing!
So my preferred post workout is a frosted chocolate cupcake milkshake (8-10 ice cubes + 8 oz cashew milk + 1/2 tsp xantham gum + 1 packet sweetener– last 2 are optional) with a serving of carbs! Today was 1 mini banana + 1 rice cake. You want simple, fast digesting carbs, and if you wanna get real technical with it, a blend of carb types is best
TLDR: eat protein + carbs post workout for #gainz & recovery. Real food is good, but so is a scoop of Select Protein.
