26 FEB: Pamir, a nine year-old Tien Shan White Claw bear, plays with a log in its enclosure after waking from a winter hibernation at the Royev Ruchey zoo in a suburb of Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, Russia. Some Siberian bears have woken up two to three weeks earlier than usual due to the warm weather, according to zoo employees. Researchers have discovered seasonal changes in the gut microbes of brown bears, which apparently help the beasts cope with the demands of hibernation. Bears feast and gain weight in the warm months, ready for the big winter doze.
