I never really thought about sharks growing up which was probably just me being really naive. I used to think that Northern California or the PNW is where the real danger was for Whites on the West coast. But in my lifetime I’ve seen an incredible increase in sightings, which has sadly resulted in more attacks as well. Never did I think that the area I grew up in would have sightings daily, often 2-3x let alone multiple fatalities.
I went bodysurfing this morning as part of my normal routine when I’m at home in CA. People were waiving their hands around making fun gestures as 3 great whites were spotted 60 ft from the lineup and a thresher. We vacated. Call it social media, more awareness, drones, warmer waters, fisherman chumming ( which is lame) or just a change in their behavior. But in my opinion there is definitely an increase.
I feel strongly that anytime we enter the sea we do so at our own risk.. Sharks are an important part of our seas and we need to respect that. More than anything I just want people to realize this is their home and not ours and just to be aware of your surroundings. Be Safe out there ✌ ️
