“Ice Cream Guy! This one is weird. I had been interested in garbage collectors, then when I was in Venice for the Bienniale, I saw this very well-known art critic just completely asleep at a table outside at La Fenice—I mean, completely passed out. And for some reason, people had just started putting trash on him, so when I walked by again later it was all over him and I just thought that looked amazing. I got this idea of putting things on people’s heads—so they weren’t just the subject of the painting, they were also a kind of surreal pedestal for a still life.” —John Currin.
Today, May 7, is the last day of Frieze New York, where we have a installed drawings by Currin, chosen from over one hundred sketchbooks and notepads.
