In our third installment on the “making” of Flaming June… we examine the background in both the painting and its preparatory oil sketch. The bunch of crimson oleander flowers on the right is an eye-catching feature in both works. In the finished painting, Leighton initially placed the flowers as they are in the oil sketch, but later painted repainted them, shifting the flowers towards the center of the composition. This subtle change helps focus the viewers’ gaze on the female figure. #frickcollection #flamingjuneatthefrick #itsallinthedetails #oleander @museoarteponce
