It was our tribe’s privilege to be able to serve our houseless

It was our tribe’s privilege to be able to serve our houseless brothers and sisters on the streets of Los Angeles in the Skid Row district. If you’ve never been there then you may not realize how good you have it. People often judge and look down upon those who don’t have permanent shelter as less than human, and it is these people who need the medicine of selfless service the most because of how disconnected they are from their heart.
In the majority of cases those living on the streets have been traumatized by war, rape, molestation, and all manner of abuses, and yet quite often they still maintain a positive attitude. This is despite living every day with a lack of adequate shelter, debilitating physical handicaps, and mental illnesses. How do you think you’d manage on their shoes?
Of course there are many cases of the opposite as well; those who are completely disconnected from reality, the ones who have succumbed entirely to despair and live as the walking dead, but this doesn’t change the fact that we are truly the ones we are helping when we serve others.
