#JohnHoyland was one of the leading British painters in the postwar abstraction movement. In 1964, he made his first visit to New York and met with artists such as #MarkRothko, #HelenFrankenthaler, #RobertMotherwell, and more. These meetings had a direct impact on his art, as he shifted to exclusively using acrylics and experimenting with new methods of using paint to create luminous and emotionally evocative works.
“John Hoyland: Stain Paintings 1964-1966” focuses on this period after his New York trip and before his retrospective at the @WhitechapelGallery in the spring of 1967. The exhibition opens September 15th at 32 East 57th Street, with a talk between Arne Glimcher and Mel Gooding discussing John Hoyland’s life and work. Please RSVP to attend at email@example.com or 212-750-0840.
