Joining The Drawing Center in celebrating a 40th anniversary, UrbanGlass was founded in 1977 as the “New York Experimental Glass Workshop” by a group of artists who moved to New York City and wanted to continue their experiments in glass. Finding no existing glass studios in New York and daunted by the impossible task of setting up individual spaces, they formed the organization as a shared studio for the larger artist community. Today UrbanGlass serves over 300 professional artists along with over 1,000 students each year, and provides opportunities for the public to explore new work in the material through its magazine Glass Quarterly, exhibition program, and store.
