Joshua Reynolds, Britain’s leading portrait painter of the period and first President of the @royalacademyarts, was born #onthisday in 1723. In his attempt to raise the status of portraiture, he created the ‘Grand Manner’ which borrowed from classical antiquity and the Old Masters to fill his portraits with moral and heroic symbolism. ⠀
We hold over fifty portraits by Reynolds in our Primary Collection, including this painting of writer and collector, William Thomas Beckford.
