July 20, 1963: Dennis Waicosky, 18, used a cardboard box to view the eclipse. Hole was punched in box, aimed at eclipse and the image viewed in the interior of the box. A set-up story appearing in the Tribune that day read: “The safest way to view the eclipse is by projecting the image of the sun thru a pin hole in a piece of cardboard onto a white surface.” #blottingoutthesun #eclipsemania #1960s
