@mrkdrf: This image, also from my series “Emergence,” is a composite of over fifty photographs. The mountainous form you see here is something that looks familiar, but in fact the mountain itself is completely fictional. Upon closer examination, the viewer sees impossible rock formations, nonsensical snowfall, and trees growing in all different directions at elevations that make no sense.
Here I was interested in the way that collected data sets—in this case the individual photograph inside of the composite, which acts as a data set—can be manipulated and examined alongside each other. When compared, transformed, and combined, data sets reveal new information that cannot be seen in isolation—only in the context of the rest of the data can some patterns be exposed.
