“My stepson Donovan suffers from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which is a rare uncontrollable form of epilepsy. He is blind, non-verbal, incapacitated and requires 24 hour nursing care. When he moved in with us almost 3 years ago it was under very stressful circumstances…let’s just say there was a ‘changing of the guards’ so to speak.
When he came to live with us we worked hard to remind him that unconditional love does exists and that was exactly what he would feel in his new home. Donovan had a canine companion that passed away the previous year and he missed his dog’s love and friendship. I had been following SSD for a while and spoke with my husband about how I wanted our next rescue to be an older dog. He was adamant that now was not the time as we had a very full plate. Yet, I simply could not stop sending him images of dogs that I thought would be a good fit.
I finally wore him down and we scheduled a meet and greet with Miss J’s foster mom. Miss J was 10 years old and had lived with the same family her entire life. I truly believe surrendering her was possibly the most loving thing her previous family did for her. She no longer allowed the family to come near her and she had started biting in defense. She was a mess….matted hair, crusty swollen eyes, fleas, collapsed trachea, bad knees and an even worse attitude. When Miss J’s foster mom placed her on Donovan’s lap it was love at first touch! Miss J, who is also visually impaired, snuggled right up to Donovan and made what we now call her Ewok sound and as we placed D’s hand on her to give her a pet her responded with a perfect smile. My husband jokes that her foster mom must have trained her to do the Ewok snuggle because after that moment she became ours forever.
She, just like Donovan, has flourished in her new home. She loves to go for walks (in her backpack!) with her pup sister & boy brother. But her favorite place to be is with her Donovan and cuddling on his lap. She refuses to use the stairs unless she is scared by a storm & then we always find her in her safe spot, Donovan’s room. She a perfect addition to this unconditional house of love.
