Photo by @amivitale on assignment for @opensocietyfoundations. Friends Kristine, Giorgi and Giorgi pose for a photo in their home in Tbilisi, Georgia, created by the NGO Hand In Hand. This home was established for adults with psychosocial and intellectual disabilities who were formerly placed inside large institutions where they had no freedom to even cook together. Often when we hear “mental health” or “intellectual disabilities,” we can assume that these people are different or even dangerous. We lock these people up away from society. The truth is that all human beings need love and inclusion. With the right support, everyone can be a valued member of their communities. We should celebrate our differences. These stories remind us of what we can achieve when we value diversity.
I am sharing work this week on the de-institutionalization of care for people with psychosocial and intellectual disabilities. Please follow along with @opensocietyfoundations.
Please join me at @photoplusexpo at the Javits Center in NYC this week! I’ll be giving a workshop on Friday, October 21 from 2-4 pm and will be speaking every day at the @nikonusa booth about the new #KeyMission 360 action cameras. Along with tremendously talented fellow NIKON ambassadors @coreyrichproductions @joemcnally @daveblackphoto @tamaralackey @deannefitzmaurice @jerrygionis and @douggorda #photoplusexpo
