The back of this postcard has the directions for use of Eagle Brand condensed milk (1887). Here at the Dittrick, we are working on a revamping a section of the main gallery on public health. Evaporated milk – concentrated and sterilized cow’s milk in sealed containers – offered an affordable infant food source recommend by physicians through the 1930s. In addition to canned varieties, parents chose from dozens of powdered products consisting of carbohydrates, starches, and dextrins to add to cow’s milk. Although fattening, the products lacked valuable nutrients like protein, vitamins, and minerals. #publichealth #medicalhistory #museum #postcard #babies #cleveland #milk
