You know the #BarnesArboretum for its breathtaking blooms, but did you know it also buzzes with beehives? Horticulture program alumna Penelope Malish is shown here releasing a queen bee, marking the start of a new “package.” This consists of a mass of bees (roughly the size of a football), a queen, and a “court” (the queen can’t feed herself). Harvest is around the end of July, after the spring nectar flow is over and the bees have had ample time to build up reserves to survive the winter. Another reason to plant flowers all year long––not just spring! #BarnesFoundation #Gardening #Horticulture #Bees
